About the Artist
Before Karl Hofer became known for solemn Expressionist paintings of isolated human figures, a coffee advertisement offered a very different stage. Born in Karlsruhe in 1878, Hofer trained at the city academy, where Hans Thoma was among his teachers. Messmer Turkish Coffee dates to 1900, long before his mature Berlin career and the Nazi classification of his art as degenerate. This early Karl Hofer vintage poster reveals a commercial commission shaped around an everyday purchase. As a fine art print today, it offers a view of the painter beyond museum canvases and through the business of selling coffee.
